The Magician

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Some of the most extraordinary creatures beneath the surface survive not by strength or speed, but by their intelligence and innate ability to disappear.

In The Magician, the octopus almost becomes part of the kelp surrounding it. Color, texture and form begin to merge until it is difficult to determine where the environment ends and the animal begins. Yet the eye remains visible, quietly watching everything around it.

I wanted the viewer to experience that discovery—to look into the kelp first and then slowly realize what has been there all along.

The Magician is about adaptation, intelligence and one of the ocean’s greatest illusions: the extraordinary ability to disappear in plain sight."
